academic coaching

Let’s find the strategies and techniques that work for you!

To take responsibility for their learning, students can set and work on goals to practice and improve their study skills.

what we’ll do

We will discuss your academic concerns so that I can best support you to find strategies that work for you. Whether it is helping you learn to revise effectively, manage disctractions, present in front of the class or assist you to break down an assessment notification into doable tasks, we can work together to set and achieve your goals, big or small.

However, study skills are not our only focus. I want you to see that in learning how to study smarter, not harder you can develop important skills in planning and completing tasks that you can then apply to many aspects of your life now and in the future.

why we’ll do it

Evidence-based metacognitive strategies help students think about and understand how they best learn both inside and outside the classroom. These academic strategies and critical thinking skills form the basis of my approach and are useful from Year 7 through Uni as study strategies.

Students can become more effective, motivated learners by incorporating academic strategies that work for them, such as these ones recommended by the NSW Department of Education, into their routine:

  • rehearsing (taking notes, flashcards, using mnemonics)
  • elaboration (paraphrasing, significant details)
  • visual supports (concept maps, annotating sources)
  • self-organisation (planning, time management, procrastination)
  • reading comprehension (reading aloud, self-questioning)
  • academic communication (writing, reasoning, presenting, developing arguments)
  • self-reflection (using feedback, summarising academic strengths and improvements)

Not all strategies work for all people, so it is important to use a student’s strengths as the basis for moving forward so they develop good study habits and meaningful personal growth.
