Teenagers have it tough. They are preoccupied with establishing their identity and discovering their place in society.
All the while they’re managing changing relationships with family, especially their parents, their friends and their “more than friends” both in real life and online.
And if that’s not enough, they have to meet the demands of school, sports and other extracurricular activities, while possibly holding down a job and dealing with personal issues.
Add to this mix the big, uncontrollable changes their chemically charged brains and bodies are going through, and this makes for one overstretched teen.
How can teens manage all this and still have time for fun?
A teen mentor is specially placed to work in partnership with a teen to help them find balance, focus and purpose amongst these competing priorities.
Filling the gaps between parents, teachers, coaches, health professionals and others telling teens what to do, a mentor uses their knowledge and experience to help teens figure out what is best for them. In the process, teens learn how to help themselves, a key life skill.
How can teens ensure their voice is heard and needs are met during this transitional time?
Providing a confidential, supportive space for a teen to discuss and examine their own values, aspirations and options, an experienced mentor can help them to:
- pursue their interests
- set and achieve their own goals – personal, academic, social, entrepreneurial, community based, etc.
- learn a range of life and academic skills
- develop confidence and self-worth
My 13 years of teaching at a Sydney co-ed independent school taught me that I have learned a lot from listening to and championing my amazing students. (Yes, I am a teacher who genuinely liked each one of their students and learned a lot from them.)
My 7 years as a life skills educator for people with disability and people experiencing homelessness have taught me compassion and exposed me to a range of insights into the abilities of people to change and embrace who they are.
I am ready to share my unique perspective with you!
